Dubstep dons Skream and Benga have put together an incredible line up for one of the last dates of WHP2010, bringing together some of the top acts across a wide spectrum of bass orientated UK dance music. Although they are performing live together as part of their Magnetic Man project earlier in the series, for this night they are both dropping solo headline DJ sets. Joining the two on the night will be Mercury Music Prize winner Ms Dynamite, who after ruling clubs and airwaves with her massive collaboration with DJ Zinc earlier this year Wile Out, recently repeated the feat with Redlight on their recent club anthem What You Talking About. Redlight will also be appearing with Toddla T as part of their brand new Roller Express project , featuring the two DJing back to back with MCs Serocee and Dread. Jungle legend and Digital Soundboy boss Shy FX will be dropping a typically heavy set, as will the ever popular Jack Beats and LA’s Gaslamp Killer, one of the most entertaining, eclectic and passionate DJs around. Rinse FM boss Geeneus will be joined by regular MC Tippa for a typically diverse set showcasing the best in upfront new music. London’s up and coming L-Vis 1990 will be proving why so many have marked him as a name to watch. MC duties on the night go to the ever entertaining Dynamite MC, Youngman and Dread.

  • Oliver Jones is indisputably one of dubstep’s most important artists, and a legend on the now global scene. He began making music at the age of 15, meeting dubstep pioneer Hatcha whilst working at Croydon’s legendary Big Apple records who introduced him to the scene. His haunting 2005 track Midnight Request Line was one of dubstep’s first ever huge crossover hits, and many peoples’ first introduction to the genre, and it remains a classic to this day. An incredibly prolific producer, he has released on labels such as Tempa, Swamp81, Big Apple, Soul Jazz and collaborated  with and remixed artists on the scene such as Benga, Silkie, Digital Mystikz, Distance, Loefah and many others. His epic remix of La Roux’s In For The Kill last year was responsible for bringing dubstep to a much wider audience, the track getting huge radio and TV exposure and helping the single get to number 2 in the charts. He is also known as one of the scene’s most entertaining DJs, his intense sets taking him to festivals and clubs across the globe, and demonstrated on his Essential mix for Radio 1, or his Watch The Ride mix. His recent collaboration project with Benga and Artwork, Magnetic Man, has proved hugely popular, and he recently released his album Outside The Box to widespread critical praise, a diverse collection that strays far from dubstep templates whilst simultaneously remaining true to the genre’s sound and ethos.
     
• Benga

  • Raised in the birthplace of dubstep, Croydon in South London, Benga has risen from one of the earliest producers of the sound to one of its biggest global stars. His huge hit Night with Coki was an early anthem of the genre, and responsible for introducing many people to the sound. His second album Diary Of An Afro Warrior is widely considered one of the best albums the genre has ever produced, showcasing his hard and technical production style which never loses sight of a track’s emotional dynamic, demonstrated on cuts such as Crunked Up, Pleasure or 26 Basslines. His releases on labels such as Tempa, Big Apple and Hotflush are always hugely popular on the scene, regularly topping DJ charts. His Magnetic Man project with frequent collaborator Skream and Artwork has also proved hugely successful, with single I Need Air one of the few dubstep songs to reach the top ten in the UK singles chart. He has also produced tracks for American superstar Eve and more recently for Katy B, whose Katy On A Mission also charting in the UK. His Essential mix on Radio 1 demonstrated why he is also considered one of the top DJs on the dubstep scene as well as one of the top producers, featuring dubplates from the likes of Jakes, Coki, Skream and Seven as well as many of his own productions.

     
• Jack Beats

  • Jack Beats smashed their way onto the scene a couple of years ago with a series of remixes for the likes of Boy 8 Bit, Deekline and AC Slater. Their style was a rough and ready mix of ghetto house, UK Garage bass lines, hip hop samples and breaks. Causing much speculation about who they were. Their identity was later revealed as Scratch Pervert Plus One and fellow turntablist turned producer Beni G of the Mixologists. Hervé quickly snapped them up for his Cheap Thrills label, their debut single What featuring Reprazent’s MC Dynamite. They’ve since put out massive remixes for the likes of La Roux, Florence and the Machine and Fake Blood, released their U.F.O. EP, recorded a storming Essential Mix for Radio 1 and toured the globe playing venues and festivals such as Fabric, Space, Eden, Bestival and Glastonbury.
     
• Toddla T & Redlight present the Roller Express

  • Two of the UK’s most exciting producers have teamed up for a brand new collaborative project, The Roller Express. As well as combining their heavyweight production styles, they have been working with MCs such as Serocee and Dread amongst other vocalists, with their highly anticipated debut material expected later this year. Toddla T’s collaborations with Serocee in the past such as Manabadman and Shake It have been huge, and Redlight has been one of the breakout stars of 2010 with his hits such as MDMA, Stupid and his massive collaboration with Ms Dynamite What You Talking About all causing a stir. Both acts count luminaries such as Skream, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Shy FX as fans, so their show promises to be a highlight of the night.
     
• Shy FX
  •  

  • Shy  FX is one of the original legends of Jungle and Drum and Bass, releasing records for almost twenty years and remaining one of the scene’s most popular figureheads and DJs. In 1994 he released the hit Original Nuttah with UK Apache on the revered label S.O.U.R, the tune remaining an anthem of the genre to this day, as are his tracks The Message, Wolf, Bambaataa and his remix of Ray Keith’s Chopper. His 2002 track Shake Ur Body was one of the few drum and bass singles to chart and receive widespread commercial airplay. In 2005 he started his own label, Digitial Soundboy, which has gone on to become one of the most respected independent labels on the UK dance scene today, releasing records by the likes of Breakage, Caspa, Skream, Redlight, Benny Page and T-Power as well as many of his own productions. He has also produced tracks for other artists across many genres, most notably Dizzee Rascal on his Maths + English and Tongue N Cheek albums.

     
• The Gaslamp Killer

  • One of the most original and entertaining DJs in the world, it is difficult to draw comparisons between LA’s Gaslamp Killer and other DJs, such is his uniqueness. A truly eclectic music lover, his sets veer from upfront dubstep to glitchy electronica, golden era hip hop to obscure Japanese psychedelic rock. His DJ style is more akin to a heavy metal musician than DJ, becoming totally swept up in the music and headbanging with his trademark wild mop of hair, whilst never missing a beat. An accomplished turntablist, his scracth routines have dazzled people across the globe at festivals such as Coachella and Sonar. Releasing his own music on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder records, he also helped set up LA’s famous Low End Theory night, a weekly showcase dedicated to promoting the  best new producers from around the globe. His numerous mix CDs such as I Spit On Your Grave and last year’s All Killer showcase his incredible record collection and selection, his sets spanning numerous genres whilst managing to retain a unified groove.
     
• Geeneus ft Tippa

  • Geeneus is perhaps best known for creating and running Rinse FM, which was up until recently London’s biggest and most influential pirate radio station. Earlier this year it was granted an official Radio licence. It was one of the first stations to promote Grime artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Skepta and Wiley, as well as being hugely influential in the dubstep scene’s growth, with acts such as Skream and Plastician regulars on the station. It is now best known for pushing the UK Funky sound, a hybrid mix of UK garage, dubstep, house, electro and soul. As well as compiling one of the genre’s defining mixes for the Rinse FM series of mix CDs, Geeneus is also one of the scene’s top producers, his tracks such as As I, Emotions and his cover of Inner City’s techno classic Good Life all UK Funky anthems. He is joined by longtime collaborator and regular MC Tippa
     
• L-Vis1990

  • London’s James Connolly is one of the most talked about young producers in the UK, his bass heavy productions taking in elements of garage, electro, uk funky, dupstep, techno and many other sounds to form a new whole.  His single United Groove, released last year on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, was a huge hit, getting plays from DJs across various scenes such as Jack Beats, Drop The Lime, Roska, Fake Blood and Annie Mac amongst many others. He frequently collaborates with fellow Night Slugs boss Bok Bok, his new single Forever You recently released on their label. His eclectic sets have seen him travel the globe playing clubs such as Fabric, Glasgow’s Numbers, Sonar festival and Field Day.  
     
• Rich Reason

  • One of Manchester’s best and most loved DJs, Rich Reason is known as the co-founder and main resident of Hit & Run, a night that has grown from humble beginnings into a huge established name bringing in the best names from drum and bass, dubstep and more to the city. Starting the night with the rapper Riz MC, who has gone on to become an acclaimed actor in films such as Four Lions, he built a reputation as both a fantastic DJ with a wide range of tastes, and a dedicated promoter with his finger on the pulse and a strong desire to provide Manchester with an incredible club featuring a mix of established names and up and coming talent. He has played with many of drum and bass and dubstep’s top DJs at clubs across the country, as well as dates in Brazil, festivals such as Kendall Calling, Outlook and Soundwave in Croatia. His production with Fantastic Mr. Fox on Untold’s Hemlock records was picked up by many DJs such as Jamie xx, who featured it on his mini mix for Annie Mac.
     
• Prophecy

  • The main man behind the huge Metropolis nights, Prophecy has played with practically every major drum and bass name around today, DJing for over a decade. Starting the night in Manchester back in 2002 with Mark OD, it has grown to epic proportions, hosting the Radio 1 and 1Xtra live broadcast on NYE and taking their events around the world. As well as Manchester they host monthly events in Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and Edinburgh. Known for his storming sets taking in old classics as well as the latest upfront releases, he has travelled all over the world taking the Metropolis reputation for quality with him.
     
• Ms Dynamite

  • The eldest child of eleven (including her brother UK hip hop star Akala), Ms Dynamite first came to people’s attention with her infectious vocal on the UK garage classic Booo! with Sticky back in 2001. She followed this top 20 hit with her debut album A Little Deeper, a stylish and accomplished collection of British urban music taking influences from soul, reggae, garage and r’n’b. The album was a huge success, winning her two Brit awards, three MOBOs, the Mercury Music Prize and containing two top ten singles, It Takes More and Dy-Na-Mi-Tee. Taking time away from the music industry to raise her son a few years later, she recently returned with the club anthem Wile Out with DJ Zinc earlier this year, a huge crossover hit that received heavy rotation on stations such as 1Xtra and Rinse FM, was played by club DJs across various scenes and reached the top 40.  She recently collaborated with Redlight on their huge What You Talking About single which looks set to repeat the success of Wile Out, and she is currently working on her highly anticipated third album entitled Democracy, expected soon.
